On August 3rd, 2020 we held our final Teen Girls in Business Virtual Mastermind Session. During the last and final session we talked about business etiquette and business marketing. Our speakers this week were:

Jeanette Morris- Chief Marketing Officer of BBOT

Here are the most important takeaways:

  1. In your business you have to figure what problem are you solving? And how are you going to do it?
  2. Have confidence in yourself
  3. Know where you are heading. Figure out your goal and make sure it is clear to the audience.
  4. When starting a business, you are going to experience fear but as the time goes by it will go away.
  5. Once you start your business you might not have as much support as you were expecting but that’s okay, just keep going.
  6. Your family, friends, and church brothers/sisters are not your clients.
  7. Get out of your inner circle and look for your true targeted audience.
  8. Just because some people do not value your business does not mean your business isn’t valuable.
  9. When building the business you must remember your building your future and passion.
  10.  You must be willing to put time and effort (time waits for no one; the more time passes by the more clients pass by).

Business Etiquette

We then had Regine talk about business etiquette which is the process of building relationship s with others. Here are the main points:

  1. Always shake hands
  2. Good morning is the biggest icebreaker
  3. Dress like you mean business
  4. Always have an attitude for learning
  5. Keep nurturing relationships
  6. Have an aptitude for learning (aptitude is defined as a high level of intellect or a quickness to learn)
  7. Work on developing your speaking skills (work on managing your emotions )
  8. Develop a sense of ownership
  9. Have the ability to adopt to any situation

  • Women owned businesses generate $1.8 trillion dollars a year
  • 40% of U.S. businesses are woman owned
  • Women entrepreneurs started 70% of new companies in the US
  • 60% of entrepreneurs between the ages of 18 to 25 report age bias as a significant barrier

The second part of the orientation was by hosted Jeanette Morris, who talked about digital marketing.

Before we continue here’s some important terminology:

Email Marketing – act of sending a group of messages to people through email. It is used widely as an effective method to attract customers.

SEO– Search engine optimization is the process of growing the quality and quantity of website traffic by increasing the visibility of a website or a web page to users of a web search engine. SEO refers to the improvement of unpaid results and excludes direct traffic and the purchase of paid placement. 

SEM– Search engine marketing is a form of Internet marketing that involves the promotion of websites by increasing their visibility in search engine results pages primarily through paid advertising.

Digital marketing is:

  • The component of marketing that utilizes Internet an online based digital technologies
  • such as desktop computers, mobile phones, and other digital media and platforms
  • to promote products and services

Digital marketing is not:

  • print (Flyers, postcards, billboards, signs, )
  • door to door selling
  • car wraps
  •  swag (branded pens, notebook, key chains,  bags, )

Types of digital marketing:

  • branding
  • social media
  • content marketing

  • email marketing

Reasons to have a website:

  • Having a website is the basis of every business
  • it’s your company storefront online
  • it generates  on average 10,000 to 50,000 visitors per month
  • people will visit your website to research and learn about your company and to potentially buy products

Creating a website:

  • Your images and concept must represent your brand
  • Hire a website developer or use DIY YouTube videos. Free templates are available
  • You need a domain name
  • A website theme
  • Website has to be mobile optimized for any phone user

Social Media:

  • Find the right platforms for your business based on the audience and the product
  • Engagement is key (like, comments, shares, purchases )
  • Post content consistently and when you get the most engagement
  • Utilize social customer care

Email Marketing: Use email marketing to:

  • Update your customers
  • Announce sales and promotions
  • Announce new products
  • Event invites

Digital marketing best practices:

  • Use a mix of digital marketing tactics such as paid ads, social ads, website marketing etc.
  • Make sure branding and messages are consistent across taxes
  • 5% of total revenue spent on marketing
  • Use data and reporting to better optimize
